What if....

Now I am no scientist (as my dad thought I should do languages and typing... as girls are secretaries!) but I have been reading up on ideas and views why our weather is so out of kilter.... and I have come across a fascinating but slightly terrifying theory....

Its all to do with the gulf stream....

and apparently its what gives Britain its fairly warm nondescript temperatures and weather patterns... the warm seas from the gulf stop us from freezing like Moscow and Northern Canada... which are level either side of us on the globe...

So if the gulf stream has been disrupted by melting icebergs or BP oil disaster in the gulf of Mexico, has this effected our climate and plunged us into an earlier than normal winter....

Are any of you stocking up, preparing for what might be a long cold winter and if so what kinda things are you doing?

I know I have to stock up on coal and wood... should have pulled my finger out of my arse and stocked up all over the summer but you keep putting it off till tomorrow... and suddenly tomorrow is cold grey and not nice at all!

I don't have much in the way of larder storage but I really aught to stock up and as we only have electric perhaps I aught to get some gas canisters for the camping gas stove we have....
Should we be preparing for what might be a real corker of a winter after all it couldn't hurt...
and what about our neighbours... we should be checking on them and making sure they are all okay... shouldn't we? or is that being pushy and nosey...?

I'm glad my youngest brother still lives at home... at least I know that there is someone there to make sure they are warm and the path is safe and that they have food in the house...

Do you know your neighbours? do you talk to them make conversation with them or is it a quick dash to the car and off to where ever your life takes you?
I know my neighbours 2 doors either side of me... I know others by sight in the village but I would have no clue if they have family or assistance or someone to call... at what point can you say... "they are not my responsibility?"

Hypothermia is the biggest killer at this time of the year and you can get too cold and then actually die hours later... once your back in your home... I keep trying to tell Jamie that she has to wear a coat to school and a hat and gloves... but she just gives me that look... she even told me that they are not allowed to wear scarves at school...

Please be careful out there my dear friends
wrap up warm in many layers and slap on your hat and gloves.... make sure your phone is charged and has credit...

I think it will be an interesting winter this year...

take care
Alex

How scary that would be if it turns out to be true! I think it wise to stock up to a certain extent but it's just not possible to prepare for 6 months of not being able to go out is it?! Our homes these days are not made to provide space for stocks to alst us through the winter and our way of life not conducive (spelling?) to being completely self sufficient. Keep some milk and basic flour, butter etc in hand and have more than one method of cooking or heating where possible and that is about all you can do I feel. Hopefully nobody in our neighbourhood will die alone with out somebody caring but again we are much more isolated these days if not physically then emotionally aren't we? Keep warm and don't worry too much about your daughter - mine lived to tell the tale of going out without sufficient clothes on in the winter although she really feels the cold these days and wraps up warm!

Well I know neighbours both sides and across the road, to talk to in passing, not spend any time with, and I also know that the one old lady on one side, who is blind and disabled, has lots of carers going in too, so I know she is taken care of. Even so, we do keep an eye out for her, in our own non-obvious way. And even though it's a large village, where the old folk are concerned, there is good community spirit and folk looking out for one another, so hopefully, nobody would lie in their garden overnight and freeze to death as happened to the old gent on the news last week, which really reduced me to tears for various reasons.
I always have a good supply of tinned goods, only a small freezer at present, and so far have never lost power for more than a few hours. Says she, touching wood....

I have already had my first fall of the year. I am one of those people who just cannot stay upright in icy weather! :O)))) However, when I go out to all the various premises I clean I take a blanket in the car and a flask. Even though I am not far from home you never know if you have to stop because of an accident and might be held up for a while. Luckily, we all keep our eyes open for the elderly near us here.

What cold photos! It not too cold here..16c at the moment. I only have neighbours in the summer, they're all holiday homes around me and all empty at the moment!
P.S thanks for visiting, I'm not selling anything yet, I think they need a bit more work, but yes my goal is to eventually set up shop and combine everything! And yes I could do names too!

Whilst I do believe we should all be concerned about climate change, I don't think the recent weather is cause for too much worry. I think we have just become so used to having milder winters over the last 15 years or so, I expect that 50 years ago this would probably have been considered perfectly normal! As for stocking up, we just don't have the space and, luckily, we do live within easy walking distance of the town. On Friday Will & I walked in and got everything we needed (although Sainsburys were rationing milk to 4pts per customer).
Glad the snow's all disappearing now though!

I am really glad - in a relieved way - that i am not the only one whose parents thought that typing was what girls have to do ... I am really glad that I can touch type - not alot of people can these days .. BUT .... I wish they had let me do what I wanted. Oh well. I do now!
